LibreOffice contains over 80,000 strings, or over 270,000 words in English, of user interface text. In this presentation I will look at what makes a good UI string, drawing from human-computer interaction and my experience in translating LibreOffice. I will also discuss ways in which designers, developers, and translators could work together to improve the quality of UI text.
I started translating LibreOffice to Finnish in 2019, working to raise the quality bar and have since taken interest in improving the original English text as well. My academic background is in human-computer interaction, which informs a lot of my thinking, but I've never felt the need to limit myself to one discipline only.
