As a staunch advocate of open knowledge and open source, I believe that open formats must form the foundation and that software should be disseminated from the grassroots up, supporting individuals in its use. 21 years of Digital Sovereignty in South-Tyrolean Schools: Project FUSS and the important role of LibreOffice

Twenty-one years ago, on September 1, 2005, all Italian-language schools in South Tyrol switched to using Free Software on all computers used for educational purposes. In this talk, I will briefly review the history of the FUSS project (Free Upgrade in South Tyrol’s Schools), the reasons behind the choice of digital sovereignty we made, and the important role covered by LibreOffice and the Open Document Format.
