Building a free AI assistant for LibreOffice Writer: lessons from 18,000+ downloads

When I set out to add AI features to LibreOffice Writer, I could not find an extension that worked out of the box. So I wanted to release a small Python extension that wrapped GPT's API. Building the sidebar for the extension was its own challenge; LibreOffice's sidebar APIs are sparsely documented, and I ended up teaching myself by using UNODIT to introspect the running application and work out how the pieces fit together. A few weeks later, LibreThinker was published on the LibreOffice extensions directory.

Discovering OpenRouter opened the door to hosting a completely free service for users who did not want to manage AI provider accounts. That introduced async job handling, error recovery across very different model backends, and the operational realities of running a free public endpoint on the open internet (including the DDoS attacks I faced). Then came support for users who wanted to connect their own AI provider account (via LiteLLM), and finally the option to run models entirely on the user's own machine through Ollama or Llama.cpp.

Six months on, the extension has over 18,000 downloads. Alongside the technical story, I will also share how the community received the project, the most common feature requests and issues encountered by users, and the user experience decisions behind it.

Exploring macOS OfficeBean Support in LibreOffice

This is a short work-in-progress talk about my attempt to understand and improve macOS support for LibreOffice OfficeBean.

I began with what looked like a missing native bridge: OfficeBean has platform code for Linux/Unix and Windows, but not for macOS. My first approach was to add a Cocoa/JNI implementation that could connect Java’s window handling with LibreOffice. That got me a little further than before, because the bridge loaded and the embedded window could be created. But the actual LibreOffice content did not render, leaving only a grey area.

The interesting part is what this revealed. The issue may not be just a missing macOS file or a simple handle-passing problem. From the discussion with maintainers, it appears that macOS has more stringent limits regarding sharing native windows between processes. So the next question is whether OfficeBean on macOS needs a different rendering approach.

I would like to use this lightning talk to share the path I followed, the problems I hit, and the possible next direction with IOSurface-based delegated rendering. I am still working on it, so feedback from people who know VCL, macOS, Skia/Metal, Java, or UNO would be especially helpful.

Chatting with open standards: Can we use XMPP for official LibreOffice communication?

This talk is meant to answer all the questions related to messaging protocols and how can we practically switch to XMPP. The XMPP protocol is similar to Matrix in principle (there are many apps and servers which can connect with each other), but lightweight and easier to self-host.

There are a lot of different server and client software available which ensures that the standard does not become too tied down to one specific implementation. I will cover how the project can switch to XMPP. Whether it is something TDF would like to self-host or use existing community run services, I will present some practical advice.

Looking to the nearer future, adoption of XMPP is good for the wider Free Software ecosystem, and LibreOffice can do its bit in driving this. Conversely, XMPP projects could help to raise awareness about us too. For example, in India, we already advertise LibreOffice at events related to Debian and Prav (an XMPP messaging app). Telegram, on the other hand, has no reason or incentive to promote LibreOffice.

From Followers to Communities: Practical Fediverse Strategies for Free Software Projects

For many organizations, social media has become an essential communication channel but also one increasingly controlled by opaque algorithms, commercial priorities, and platform lock-in.

The Fediverse offers a different model: decentralized, interoperable social platforms where communities own their relationships instead of renting access to them.

Yet many organizations experience disappointing results after creating a Mastodon account because they approach it exactly like another proprietary social network.

This session shares practical experience gained from years of building and moderating large Fediverse communities in Italy, including successful migration campaigns involving thousands of users.

Topics include:

* Why simple cross-posting usually fails
* Understanding the social dynamics of the Fediverse
* Creating content that encourages conversation instead of passive consumption
* Practical onboarding techniques for newcomers
* Helping existing followers migrate gradually
* Using account collections, starter packs, and community recommendations
* Running communication on both proprietary platforms and the Fediverse during a transition period
* Measuring community health beyond follower numbers
* Reducing dependence on algorithmic platforms while increasing long-term resilience

The session is based on real-world experiments rather than theory and focuses on practical, immediately applicable strategies for communities of any size.

Improve accessibility within the Libre Office Community - findings of a Digital Accessibility Project and what we can learn from them

Digital accessibility in software is often treated primarily as a technical issue - focusing on semantic HTML, screen reader compatibility, or color contrast settings or the proper PDF/A Conversion. However, accessibility is not created by technology alone; it is equally shaped by development processes, communication, organizational structures, role perceptions and community culture. Recent EU regulations, including the European Accessibility Act (EAA), reinforce the importance of digital accessibility and highlight the need for open-source communities to address it collectively and more systematically.

This talk presents selected findings from the project “Digital Accessibility in the Workspace through Participatory Evaluation” with a particular focus on developer perspectives, open-source communities and accessibility knowledge within the community.

Based on interview analyses, surveys, and practical reports from open-source communities, the presentation explores how developers perceive accessibility in their daily work, which barriers exist within development processes, and how community structures can either support or hinder accessible software development. A key objective is to strengthen the participation of people with disabilities as experts within these processes.

The findings offer ideas and inspiration for increasing awareness of and engagement with accessibility across the LibreOffice community. So the session aims to bring these selected insights back into the community and encourage discussion about how accessibility can become a more natural and shared responsibility across the broader open-source and software development ecosystem.

Mapping the Evolution of ODF with LibreOffice: Versions, Applications, Interoperability, and Structured Knowledge

ODF is an important open standard for office documents. It helps people and organizations keep access to their documents over a long time, and it allows different applications to work with the same document formats. This is especially important when documents must remain usable across many years, systems, and organizations.
Still, the history and current state of ODF are not always easy to understand. Each ODF version has added or changed features. Each application supports different versions and features. Some tools can read or write ODF files directly, while others can work with ODF data through data-processing workflows. As a result, useful knowledge about ODF is often spread across many places.
In this session, Koji Annoura will show a way to manage this knowledge using LibreOffice itself. The main example will be ODF versions, ODF-compatible applications, related tools, and interoperability. The session will also be a case study in a more general method: collecting information, checking sources, structuring data, and keeping the result in a form that can be maintained with LibreOffice and ODF.
The session will cover:
how to collect and verify information about ODF versions, applications, and interoperability from scattered sources
how to organize this information as structured data using LibreOffice Calc and Base
how this LibreOffice-centered method can be reused for other technical research and knowledge management tasks
Related tools such as Apache Hop, Neo4j, and SQL/PGQ expected in PostgreSQL 19 will be mentioned as optional extensions. They can help when data processing or deeper relationship analysis is needed. However, the main focus will remain on LibreOffice and ODF.
This session is not about replacing structured data with AI output. AI systems can suggest hints, directions, and possible research paths. But complete and reliable knowledge still needs to be stored and maintained properly as data, just as before.
For this reason, it is important not to depend only on a specific AI service or a temporary processing result. Knowledge data should be kept in open formats, such as LibreOffice documents and ODF. By keeping the data in open formats and using LibreOffice to manage and explore it, we can make the evolution of ODF easier to understand, easier to explain, and easier to preserve.
This approach is not limited to ODF. The same method can be used for other topics where information is spread across specifications, documentation, release notes, websites, and community knowledge. Examples include technical research, migration planning, interoperability analysis, educational materials, and organizational knowledge management.
This approach may also support long-term digital sovereignty by keeping knowledge data in open formats that can be maintained and inspected with LibreOffice.

Designing a Tileable Dynamic UI for LibreOffice

This presentation proposes a structural rethink of the LibreOffice workspace by introducing a native, tileable UI framework. The goal is to allow users especially those transitioning from Microsoft Office to completely customize their environment via a drag and drop widget and button system. To ensure maximum compatibility and performance, the proposal focuses entirely on utilizing LibreOffice's existing native libraries, rejecting heavy web app overlays to maintain a lightweight memory footprint. The talk will cover the UX layout logic, the benefits of native UI state management, and the potential impact on user onboarding.
