This will be a workshop / interactive talk with just having TDF members as a members-only room.
Both LibreOffice as an application, and the ODF document specification, partition languages into three groups: Western (mostly Latin) languages, languages written right-to-left (RTL) or with complex text layout (CTL), and languages from the group of Chinese, Japanese and Korean (with ideograms, more prospects for vertical layout etc.)
In this talk, we will challenge this trichotomy!
We'll survey different aspects of how it is applied, both "under the hood" in the actual document and in the UI; observe problems and failings of this application - some fundamental, some more coincidental; and argue that even in principle, it is an invalid distinction.
Finally, we will consider some aspects of a "non-trichotomic" approach to representation of languages and language-related features in LO and ODF.
