Work on LibreOffice can be supported by grants from European Union and other sources. Translation, documentation, trainings, even development is in the heart of this or that grant program. How we can collaborate to make it happen and how can you make your work easier and more impactful? Let&apos;s see a possible future!
<description>LIbreOffice is already a great software very well usable in multiple domains. But how it can be more spread into public? In this session I will present a roadmap (not &quot;the roadmap&quot;) for more support for LibreOffice in Europe with use of grants from different sources. With such grants we can accelerate work in translation, education, marketing, and even development of LibreOffice, while providing better compensation to activists than by volunteering.

While learning to participate in a new grant programe can be challenging at first, with right direction, support and time it becames easier. Especialy when your colleagues from other countries are doing it too. And, well, I learned how to do it, so you can as well ;-)

The session will focus on Europe but with some modifications can be used for other parts of Earth.</description>

This talk explores the various challenges that public sector organisations face when trying to international jointly fund improvements and bug fixes in the LibreOffice project. Many such agencies rely on LibreOffice for daily operations, yet coordinated contributions remain rare. The presentation examines institutional, legal, and procedural differences that make joint funding difficult. Barriers include mismatched budget timelines, procurement constraints, and internal decision-making complexity. Additional factors like unclear shared benefits, differing priorities, and limited cross-agency communication further hinder collaboration. The talk includes examples from past funding attempts, both failed and successful, to highlight real-world dynamics.
The talk aims to structure these problems and work on a process and set up, that could support joint investment efforts, which could overcome these challenges in a WIN-WIN-WIN model for all stakeholders. By fostering better alignment and mutual understanding, the session is to spark discussion and offer concrete strategies for moving from fragmented to coordinated action.

There&apos;s the myth that setting up a LibreOffice development environment is complicated, this talk will prove the opposite.
<description>It used to be that setting up a build environment was complicated if you were not using Linux, and even then it was tedious.
But there have been many improvements in streamlining the dependencies and setting it up these days is pretty easy and straightforward actually.

And we have integrations into many IDEs as well.

The talk focuses on Windows, since there has been the most progress/biggest changes, but the other platforms (macOS/Linux) are covered as well.</description>

I gave the first version of this talk about using include-what-you-use on LibreOffice core in 2019, let&apos;s see what changes happened since then and what are the results of the continued effort.
<description>Compilation time of the LibreOffice core is a continous concern, one way to reduce it is to use include-what-you-use to reduce the compiler input, by removing unneeded headers.
The include-what-you-use tool and our wrapper script was continously improved and used to achieve this.
In this talk I&apos;ll try to give an overview of the results and ideas for possible future improvements.</description>

Have you ever thought about security when opening a sample from a Bugzilla ticket or trying out some new library? Experienced developers often assume, that every programmer knows the necessary things about security. But rarely does anyone take the time to guide young developers into this topic and it&apos;s various aspects. This talk will give an introduction about risks and how to handle them in a convenient way when programming. From how to improve your devices and accounts security to the LibreOffice supply chain to the security impact of the LibreOffice users.
<description>This talk intends to give developers pragmatic starting points about what to think in terms of security. But it&apos;ll also cover some handy FOSS tools to actually strengthen security. It will be shown how virtualization, Linux namespaces and containerization tools can be leveraged. As well as what to look for when importing a new library or using new development tools you found &quot;lying at the roadside of the Internet&quot;. But we&apos;ll also shed some light on how you as a developer influence the security of people who use your software and how to secure your devices and accounts properly.

How to involve the wider community in your free software project&apos;s development.
<description>Free (Libre) Software gives users right to modify the software. However, many times, the focus is on features that are more interesting for developers to work on. This unfortunately means that features which are less interesting to develop but still desired by users don&apos;t get prioritized enough. For instance, re-writing an existing software in their favorite programming language might be more attractive to a developer than adding a missing feature to an existing software written in a programming language they don&apos;t like.

Prav(https://prav.app) is a free software messaging app and service based on the federated XMPP protocol - does the reverse - the community votes on features to be added and then hires developers to implement those features. DEPHCOM is another community geared towards making Debian for mobiles more user-friendly. In DEPHCOM, we fund developers to add features based on user needs.

In this talk, I will share the story of Prav and DEPHCOM - two free software projects where user needs are prioritized in order to add features and drive software development.</description>

Not only LibreOffice, also other tools have the problems that overfeaturing gets confusion, and also may cause problems or errors in non cosiderated situation. The tool gets worse and worse over time. This can sometimes be seen on software tools.
Libre Office is developed by enthusiasts and used by normal consumers who have different ideas about things and usage - in a democratic way.
The presentation also looks at the role and type of individuals.

                <language>en</language>
In this workshop, we will attempt to define the outlines of a development scope - according to current market and industry trends and the opinion of community members, including ecosystem companies, and end users - that will allow us to reconcile the ecosystem&apos;s product and the foundation&apos;s product with a view to success, without exhausting resources in endless debates, by involving the community, because it is the community on the ground that will carry out the support and advocacy work.
Technology is evolving rapidly; with AI, markets are being reshaped.
The resources of both sides are limited. There is also a lack of communication, documentation, and training to ensure that LibreOffice and related technologies are disseminated, whether free or licensed. It is the satisfaction of the end user that counts.
<description>In this workshop, we try to :

Define a clear and achievable scope for community and institutional contributions.

Identify concrete levers to strengthen communication, documentation, training, and local outreach.

Promote coordination without overloading limited resources.

Integrate technological changes (AI, cloud, web) into strategic choices.

Localization (L10N) plays a crucial role in making LibreOffice accessible to users worldwide. This roundtable builds on experiences from previous LibreOffice community discussions, such as the localization strategy roundtable held at the 2017 LibreOffice Conference in Rome.

It provides a forum for LibreOffice localization contributors to engage in open discussion, sharing knowledge, best practices, and challenges.

Participants will discuss topics such as translation quality, collaboration strategies, and community growth. The goal is to foster stronger connections and mutual learning within the LibreOffice localization community.

You can massively simplify your LOWA (LibreOffice Web ASseMbly) developing experience by using proper C++ debugging tools for the browser. If there where not some obstacles which come from driving the huge amount of LibreOffice debug symbols trough the web environment. Let me take you trough the major blocker, so you can reliably debug your WASM code.
<description>We&apos;ll dive into the details of building and debugging LibreOffice WASM builds in the browser. This involves handling multiple gigabytes of debug symbols and making the debug tools handle them smoothly, while driving browser memory boundaries to their limits. Also we&apos;ll have a look at the general state of C++ debugging in the browser. But we&apos;ll mainly concentrate on the LibreOffice build options and how to use LOWA debug builds with the Chromium &quot;C/C++ DevTools&quot; for DWARF debug symbols.

Using Abstract Windowing Toolkit [tabbed dialog Uno Api](https://api.libreoffice.org/docs/idl/ref/namespacecom_1_1sun_1_1star_1_1awt_1_1tab.html) requires to build a dynamic dialog in order to embed controls in UNO defined tabs. This is error-prone and subject to numerous graphical adjustments.

Two examples suggest to design each tab - or each pane - as individual dialogs via Basic IDE dialog editor. Dialog controls can be imported &#8211; using [ScriptForge facilities](https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/sbasic/shared/03/lib_ScriptForge.html?DbPAR=BASIC) - including associated event routines.

Let me give you an update on integrating LibreOffice into web apps. This talk will dive into some up to date examples how to build data driven web apps based on LibreOffice. And we&apos;ll shed light on the significant work that was done in the last year, to make the C++ API accessible supporting up to date TypeScript features for the web.
<description>Apps for specialized uses cases need a powerful engine. This is as true for the web as it is for the desktop. And it enables business specific apps (ger: Fachverfahren) as well as any other web based app like an informative monitor for the solar power plant on your balcony. So LibreOffice&apos;s APIs are constantly being improved to provide a smooth experience for web app developers. So web apps can be build on APIs for client side LOWA, as well as server side LibreOffice.

Improving interoperability with OOXML format may seem like an uphill battle, but there is quite a lot of improvement. I&apos;d like to stop here and appreciate all the great work done since the last conference and the previous edition of this talk.
<description>In this talk I&apos;d like to give a 10 thousand meter overview of what feature areas of Writer, Calc and Impress can be deemed safe to use with OOXML format and which need a bit more investment.
There are also areas where I see huge opportunities for improvement, yet the need of focus on these may not be obvious for all.</description>

Users having to deal with non-native formats in LibreOffice regularly run into various problems related to interoperability. This talk is about how an automated tool recently developed for Collabora Online can be used, utilizing hundreds of thousands of publicly available test files, to find both long-time and recently introduced issues affecting validity of exported XML-based MS Office formats, and how this tool can identify regressing changes using LibreOffice&apos;s bibisect builds and the bibisect process. The talk will also show a few examples of such issues, and how they got fixed in the end.

The process of documentation can be tedious, demanding and take some time. The Brazilian documentation team met up with a member of the Czek team to learn about using the OmegaT CAT tool in combination with GitHub for team translation. The best part is the translation memory. Future translations will demand much less labor and time due to the translation memory created.

LibreOffice includes various CJK features, and it is important that CJK users actively report and fix any issues that arise.

This talk will first introduce the historical background and role of &quot;Gaiji&quot; (user-defined characters) specific to the Japanese language. It will also cover government efforts on font development and management, along with future prospects.

Next, I will introduce representative bugs that have been fixed during the past year, as well as major bugs that remain unresolved. Concrete examples will be provided.

Finally, the talk will briefly introduce the current state and challenges of the Japanese community. It will also provide an overview of the Asia Conference to be held this December.

Both LibreOffice as an application, and the ODF document specification, partition languages into three groups: Western (mostly Latin) languages, languages written right-to-left (RTL) or with complex text layout (CTL), and languages from the group of Chinese, Japanese and Korean (with ideograms, more prospects for vertical layout etc.)

In this talk, we will challenge this trichotomy!

We&apos;ll survey different aspects of how it is applied, both &quot;under the hood&quot; in the actual document and in the UI; observe problems and failings of this application - some fundamental, some more coincidental; and argue that even in principle, it is an invalid distinction.

Finally, we will consider some aspects of a &quot;non-trichotomic&quot; approach to representation of languages and language-related features in LO and ODF.

LibreOffice, and the ODF specification, partition the set of languages into three groups: Western, RTL/CTL, and Asian/CJK. In this talk

With free software, the users control the program, both individually and collectively. So they control what their computers do (assuming those computers are loyal and do what the users&apos; programs tell them to do).

With proprietary software, the program controls the users, and some other entity (the developer or &#8220;owner&#8221;) controls the program. So the proprietary program gives its developer power over its users. That is unjust in itself; moreover, it tempts the developer to mistreat the users in other ways.

Even when proprietary software isn&apos;t downright malicious, its developers have an incentive to make it addictive, controlling and manipulative. You can say, as does the author of that article, that the developers have an ethical obligation not to do that, but generally they follow their interests. If you want this not to happen, make sure the program is controlled by its users.

Freedom means having control over your own life. If you use a program to carry out activities in your life, your freedom depends on your having control over the program. You deserve to have control over the programs you use, and all the more so when you use them for something important in your life.
<description>Advocating for free software isn&apos;t just a matter of personal values (although it would be reason enough alone): it is an essential building block of any free society. In 2025, most people interact more or less with software that is controlled by a tech industry that jealously guards its secrets. When the choice to understand and alter the technology that runs our world is locked away, we the people are forced to live in a non-free society. We don&apos;t have to accept an existence reminiscent of dystopian novels. While free software doesn&apos;t guarantee a free society, it does provide many kinds of frameworks and tools needed for building and sustaining free societies.

At the individual user level, free software is an important component of a free society because it allows users to study source code and alter it to suit their needs instead of the desires of proprietary vendors. With freedom in mind, there is no good reason why a tech giant should be able to tell you how, on which device, and for what purpose you can run a program. There are only bad reasons to deprive you of the freedom to study, modify, and share the program. Everyone should have the choice to control their own computing.

At a governmental level, a free society is dependent on accountable governance that is influenced only by its people, not by outside entities. When a government uses proprietary software, power is ripped away from the people and sold to the highest-paying corporation. Residents of a country have significantly less influence over their government when it&apos;s controlled by private money, and as a consequence, much less control over the laws in place, the choices they have, and who gets to watch the lives they lead. There may even be a strong suggestion or requirement to use proprietary software for government business. In addition to all of these freedom violations resulting from a government using non-free or jailed software, the government (and basically anyone), is unable to shield itself from foreign influences accessing a possibly unlimited amount of information. A government run on proprietary software must be held accountable by its people for not using free or open software.

For a society to be free, everyone must possess freedom of speech and the right to express dissent through protest. Free software allows activists to check and confirm privacy on their devices and channels before organizing and discussing issues. It allows movements and journalists, no matter how autocratic the society, to coordinate protests, express opinions, and publish facts without fear of prosecution or even violence. Free software makes it possible for people at every level to work for a free society.

A society is not free when it is rife with injustice, and free software is a vital weapon against injustice. Free software helps remove barriers to seeking any kind of information that a person may need or want, from life-saving reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare to how to build a computer from scratch and program troubleshooting. It allows scientists of all levels and backgrounds to contribute to disaster response programs and equity-informed technology solutions that make human existence more sustainable. Free software also makes it possible for us to have control over the medical technology that helps keep us healthy. If you look at an aspect of a society that is currently not free and just, there is probably a way that free software can contribute to it being more free.

We don&apos;t have to accept the &quot;predetermined&quot; path of non-freedom. You and I, and everyone else who lives on this planet, deserve to make our own choices when it comes to software. We shouldn&apos;t be forced to allow tech giants to control our destinies. We can decide who gets to have a say over our technology and our societies. Contd ........</description>

Me and Heiko talk about various changes in the UI and Theming, the identified problems, the solutions being worked upon, potential solutions and general direction.
<description>The Appearance tab was redesigned after the GSoC project, themes were first bundled then simplified. Document colors were first changed as per the application theme, but then a toggle was added to force use the white document colors. There were themes, which represented groups of various UI elements and appearance which specified light/dark/system color modes. These were merged into one entity &quot;LibreOffice Theme&quot; for sanity.

Then there was a second project which focused on improving the overall appearance on windows by implementing native widgets. This ended in disaster however as windows doesn&apos;t have any modern widget toolkit, win32 just couldn&apos;t do it and WinUI3 has been abandoned by Microsoft. A lot of small issues were identified and which when grouped together make LibreOffice look &quot;old/not-modern&quot; on windows, and a number of action items were created, which are currently being worked upon.

the welcome dialog was a welcome addition to the batch by Heiko, which increases the visibility of various UI options which the user otherwise wouldn&apos;t have discovered intuitively.</description>

Many Japanese universities ask students to write papers using unique Microsoft Word formats. These formats include strict rules for fonts, spacing, margins, and more. Using LibreOffice to match these formats is often difficult.

In this talk, I will show how I recreated several university formats in LibreOffice Writer. I will also introduce a project to create and share many templates for different universities. This can help spread LibreOffice in Japan and offer a useful example for other Asian countries with similar needs.

In the future, these templates could also be adapted for academic conference papers, further encouraging the use of LibreOffice in research communities.
<description>In Japan, universities often require students to follow specific formatting rules for writing theses and reports. These rules are usually based on Microsoft Word and include detailed settings for fonts, line spacing, margins, and layout. However, these requirements are different at each university, which makes it hard to follow them using LibreOffice.

In this session, I will share how I recreated one university&#8217;s thesis format using LibreOffice Writer. I will explain the steps I took, such as setting up styles, adjusting fonts, and making the layout match the original Word version. I will also talk about a larger project: creating and sharing many templates, each made for a different university.

Instead of using one general template, this project builds a collection of specific templates that others can use and improve. It will make LibreOffice more useful in Japanese schools, and it can also help in other Asian countries with similar formatting needs.

Looking ahead, these templates could also be extended to meet the formatting requirements of academic conferences, helping LibreOffice gain wider adoption in research and professional writing.</description>
